Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)

The appearance of the skin around your eyes conveys not only your age but also how well rested you appear to be. If you have wrinkles, puffy eyes, or drooping upper lids, your appearance may be masking your true vitality and energy. Eyelid surgery can smooth this area so that others notice your eyes and not the skin around them.

Eyelid surgery involves removing excess tissue from the upper and/or lower eyelids. The procedure usually lasts about an hour and can be done in our office with a mild anesthetic. The incision for upper lids is made in the natural fold above the eye, so it is not conspicuous while healing. The incision for lower lids is made either inside the eyelid or just below the lashes.

During recovery, patients should follow a series of simple instructions. Most patients experience some bruising after surgery; therefore it is necessary to keep your head elevated and apply ice packs for the first two days. The stitches are usually removed after five to six days. To avoid irritation of the eyes, patients should not wear contact lenses or eye makeup for up to one week after surgery. It is usually advisable to wear sunglasses for several weeks while outdoors.
